*Is the Air in Battersea Killing You?*
Battersea Society Public Meeting on air Pollution in Battersea
*Tuesday 11 November 2014 at 7.00pm for 7.30pm*
All Saints Church, Prince of Wales Drive (Near the Queenstown Road Roundabout)
The Battersea Society for much of this year has been running a
campaign on air pollution in Battersea, chiefly by carrying out
‘citizen science’ measurements at Clapham junction and Battersea Park
Road/Nine elms Lane. We have also begun work with environmental
health officers of Wandsworth Borough Council and have had meetings
with Wandsworth’s Director of Public Health.
We now wish to share our findings and describe our work with residents
of Battersea and others, and have organised this public meeting to do
so. Our aim is also to outline positive steps to improve air quality
that can be taken in our locality. This is timely because Wandsworth
Borough Council have produced an updated Air Quality Action Plan which
is now open to consultation.
Our ‘citizen science’ surveys have produced some alarming results. At
Clapham junction we found that particulate matter ,the most dangerous
type of urban pollution , was five times above the European Union
Limit and nitrogen dioxide levels were double the European limit.
Most alarmingly our readings of nitrogen dioxide levels under the
Falcon Road Railway bridge were amongst the highest of anywhere in
London.
