Air Quality in London Survey

Overview

In recent years, a number of studies have established the link between
poor air quality and health in urban areas. Road, air and rail
transport, shipping, domestic, commercial heating, industry and power
generation all generate polluting emissions; while natural sources
including wind-blown sea salt, sand or soil also contribute to air
pollution levels.

Last year the Mayor announced his ambition for London, ‘Vision 2020’,
which included meeting strict European Union limits for air
pollutants. This is a challenge for London’s transport network, recent
modelling has indicated approximately half the emissions of most
concern[1] are from rail and road transport. That proportion is even
greater in central London, where human exposure is also at its highest.
