You probably saw the Government answering a parliamentary question about
calculating deaths attributable to air pollution earlier this week:

'The Health Protection Agency has arranged the calculation of the
mortality burden attributable to long-term exposure to particulate air
pollution (PM2.5) for English upper-tier local authorities.'

The figures for deaths attributable to for air pollution ('mortality
burden') are here:

The wonderful people associated with MySociety have arranged for the above
data to be shown in maps. Interesting to note the differences.

1) London. This mapping was produced by Anna Powell-Smith:

2) England. This mapping is by Matthew Somerville:

Cities (and London in particular) are elevated but also see Luton. Why is
Luton elevated? Is it the presence of Luton Airport and the M1 Motorway? I
guess in other upper-tier local authorities which have airports for
example West Sussex (with Gatwick airport) then the population is more
dispersed? i.e. the drawing of the boundaries of the authorities matters?
Answers on a postcard please!
