Air Quality in Health and Wellbeing Strategies

Question No: 3763 / 2012

Murad Qureshi

Are you content that London boroughs' Health and Wellbeing Strategies do
not include information on air quality, especially as this a public health
issue which is a major cause for concern? What lead are you giving to the
inclusion of air quality concerns to local councils producing their Health
and Wellbeing Strategies?

Written response from the Mayor

>From April 2013 boroughs will have will have responsibility for public
health and will be required to publish a Health and Wellbeing Strategy. My
officers are producing bespoke air quality guidance documents for each
borough to feed into this process. We will continue to work with them over
the coming months while their strategies are being refined.

It is for boroughs to determine their local health priorities and as air
quality is a localised issue it may not be chosen as a priority when
considered against other pressing health concerns.
